TORONTO – September 16, 2020 – Following an extensive international search, the Toronto Global Board of Directors today announced the appointment of Stephen Lund as Chief Executive Officer. For the past five years, Stephen has served as the CEO and Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Small Business at Opportunities New Brunswick and will begin his new role with Toronto Global on September 23.
A proven leader in the economic development and investment promotion industry, Stephen brings 30 years of progressive leadership experience in private and public sector organizations, including twenty years at the CEO level in the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) sector in Atlantic Canada. Stephen has been recognized by Atlantic Business Magazine as one of the Top 50 CEOs in Atlantic Canada five times in a row, was named one of the Top 500 most influential people in Financial Centres worldwide, and has been inducted into Atlantic Business Magazine's CEO Hall of Fame.
"To say that I am excited about the opportunity to join the highly respected team at Toronto Global is an understatement," said Lund. "The Toronto Region is a powerhouse on the international stage and is only becoming more attractive to international investors as we navigate these unchartered waters in the post-COVID era. There is so much opportunity to bring in the right investments that will strengthen and rebuild our regional economy, and I am honoured to take on this task working with all of our partners from the federal, provincial and municipal governments."
Prior to leading Opportunities New Brunswick, Stephen worked in the financial services industry before taking on the task of building a new organization aimed at attracting investment to the Province of Nova Scotia. Stephen built Nova Scotia Business Inc. from the ground up and served as its President and CEO for twelve years. His experience building an organization and working with multiple stakeholders in both the private and public sectors will be instrumental to his new role at Toronto Global, where he will be working closely with all three levels of government, in addition to the Toronto Region business community.
"Stephen's depth of experience in the economic development industry, his proven track record, combined with his understanding and appreciation of the important part Toronto Global is playing in the rebuilding of our regional economy, make him the right person to fill this role and work together alongside our partners and stakeholders," said Mark Cohon, Chair of the Board of Directors at Toronto Global. "His reputation as an exceptional leader that creates an outstanding corporate culture for his team gives me confidence that he is the right person to lead Toronto Global into the future."
"Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with Stephen in many different capacities," said Frank McKenna, Deputy Chairman of the Toronto-Dominion Bank and former Premier of New Brunswick. "His proven track record for attracting FDI and working effectively with all stakeholders, including government partners, is outshined only by his energy, enthusiasm and passion for his work. This is truly a loss for Atlantic Canada and a win for the Toronto Region. I wish him all the best in his new role."
"After our first three years of operations, Toronto Global secured over 109 investment projects, created nearly 6,000 direct jobs, and generated nearly $978 million in capital expenditure for the Toronto Region," said Janet Ecker, Vice Chair of the Toronto Global Board of Directors. "We know that Stephen has the leadership skills and capacity to build on this track record and take the organization to its next stage of growth. We are thrilled to welcome Stephen to the Toronto Region."
