GM

Following a $1B investment from GM, and $500M investment from the federal and provincial government, GM opened Canada’s first large-scale EV plant in December 2022, and reopened production at their Oshawa plant.

Ford

Ford announced investment of $1.95B for upgrades to the Oakville assembly plant to produce batteries and five EV models starting in 2024.

Stellantis

Stellantis invested $3.4B to Brampton and Windsor plant to re-tool for more PHEV/EV production; Brampton plant received World Class Manufacturing award.

BYD

BYD opened a 45,000 square foot electric bus manufacturing plant in Newmarket to service the Toronto Transit Commission among other clients.

MAGNA

In February 2023, Magna announced a $470M investment to expand its operations across Ontario. The expansion includes a new battery enclosures facility in Brampton.

Spotlight:

Geotab

A globally successful telematics & IoT software as a service giant was created in the Toronto Region.

Founded in the year 2000, Geotab now has a global mosaic of customers such as Enterprise Rent-a-Car; the City of Madrid, Sacramento County, Caledonian Logistics and Kyocera. They are the first telematics outfit to surpass two million connected vehicles on a single platform. With over 2,000 employees worldwide in 30 office locations – Geotab processes over 40B data points daily.

Geotab’s global reach includes partnerships with Volvo, Ford, GM, PSA Groupe and SAP. Geotab is also a strategic partner with Deloitte’s Future of Mobility Solution Centre in Singapore. Acquisitions include FleetCarma and Strategic Telecom Solutions.

Already prepared for the coming wave of fleet electrification, Geotab has developed software for logistics companies to assess the ROI of fleet electrification, monitor battery life and temperature and optimize charging. With Geotab’s massive pool of data on 3,500 organizations and 179,000 light-duty fleet vehicles, they have estimated that 60% of North American logistics companies can access significant financial benefits from immediate electrification.

With continuous innovation as critical to the company’s success, Geotab created an in-house accelerator called Torque Labs to support the development of new business models and technologies for their growing platform.

The Torque Labs accelerator provides early-stage companies in verticals such as big data and analytics, fleet management, supply chain, autonomous vehicles, smart cities, asset management, IoT and hardware, electric vehicles and vehicle sharing with funding and access to Geotab’s resources and mentorship.
