The Province of Ontario has some of the most generous tax incentives in the world for the media and digital media industries. Funds for most programs are administered through Ontario Creates.

CBS

U.S. entertainment company CBS Television Studios opened a 260,000 square-foot television and film production hub located in Mississauga.

The company says the hub will include six sound stages, production offices and other support facilities for large-scale television and film production.

The studio will provide extra production space for notable television programs such as Criminal Minds, Survivor, and The Price is Right.

NETFLIX

Building off the successes of it’s Canadian shows, the streaming giant Netflix, opened its first Canadian office in Toronto. Netflix spends over $200 million annually on productions in Toronto and produces well-known shows and films such as Fubar in the Toronto Region.

Shopify Studios

Canadian e-commerce brand Shopify announced that they are launching a TV and film production studio in Toronto called Shopify Studios. Among the first wave of content, Shopify will also release a series of 20-30 minute films showcasing entrepreneurs.

Bao

During the 2019 Oscars, two Sheridan animation alumni were nominated for Oscars in the Best Animated Short Film category for their directorial debuts. In addition, a media arts alumnus received a nomination for Sound Mixing. Bao, one of the animated films nominated, won Best Animated Short Film.
